Portfolio Director – Education, Skills and Employment

12-month fixed-term contract

 

About the role

This is a unique opportunity to carry out an interesting and varied role, leading the strategic direction of our Education, Skills and Employment Portfolio.  We are looking for an experienced leader to cover a 12-month period, ensuring both continuity and development of this critical service on St Helena.


What you’ll do

With overall accountability to lead the portfolio, you will provide expertise support and guidance across all aspects of the portfolio, which includes primary, secondary and tertiary education, as well as the lifelong learning sector.  You will also be a key member of the Public Service’s Senior Leadership team, working with Portfolio Directors and colleagues across all aspects of the Public service’s responsibilities to ensure corporate responsibility and accountability.  The full role profile is attached for more detailed information.


What you’ll bring

With a degree / masters qualification or demonstrable level of attainment and experience in the field of education, you will be an experienced senior leader, bringing with you extensive background in education leadership beyond individual school level.  Your career will have involved the delivery of strategic level programmes, developing and leading high performing teams, managing complex programmes and processes with accountability for significant levels of resources and strategic impact. You’ll have the ability to quickly grasp the role and ensure continuity, delivery and development from an early stage, engaging a wide audience of senior education colleagues, Government Ministers, Public Service colleagues, and the wider stakeholder group of students, teachers and the public.  The full person specification is below for more detailed information.

What we offer

  • Salary 80-90k determined based on experience and demonstrable career progression

  • International allowance of £18,800 per annum

  • Travel to / from St Helena at the start and end of the contract

  • Pension contribution of 7.5% of annual salary at the end of the contract

  • Relocation allowance

  • Annual leave 30 days

What it’s like to live and work on St Helena

St Helena is a small and beautiful island in the South Atlantic.  The location and setting is unique, and offers many out-of-work activities for people who enjoy outdoor life.  It is also very remote, access is limited, and anyone wishing to apply for the role should research as much as possible to ensure that the island, as well as the role, can meet personal needs. The ability to demonstrate resilience and embrace inclusion and change is essential.
